Hi,
I'm Unix and Windows system administrator by trade and my interest in OS X has Piqued and I just have to have a play with it and see what its like, so I'm on the verge of venturing into Mac world for the first time by puchasing an iBook.
Unfortunatly I know nothing about PPC performance on OS X.
I've looked at speccing up a 12" G4 iBook to include an extra 512MB of RAM, a 60GB drive and the BT and 802.11 expansions, it's looking like it'll cost a little over $2200 AUD.
My question is this:- Am I going to get decent launch and navigation performance in general usage around the OS with a system like this, or would I be safer going for a 12" powerbook and adding a chunk of extra RAM to that instead to achieve snappy performance? I assume the 768MB of total RAM will prvent any paging or swapping on the disk, but is the 1Ghz G4 fast enough to keep up with OS X's demands?
Thanks in advance
James
