Not sure now about the earlier 233 and 266MHz iMacs but given other stuff on thoe models you probably had to dismantle the thing, but the 350 (five fruit flavours) and beyond had the battery accessible through the small cover on the base where you access the RAM. I have a pair of pointy nose pliers with a right angle in them ($2 from teh Reject Shop) which is useful for getting a hold of the battery. a good big pair of tweezers is just as good. Or you can do it with fingers. I found 3.6V batteries from Olympic batteries in Adelaide for about $6 a few years back. They came with connecting wires soldered on, but just cut them and grind the solder off by rubbing on concrete or pavers!
