That's an interesting tale! I've found 7220s a weird Mac, very different
to the 7200-7600 series. The RAM is a tricky one. It may be there is an
upper limit issue. Have you read the "Low End Mac" page on the
7220-4400? The 160MHz model's mobo can only use 32Mb dimms to a max of
96Mb, the 200MHz model can take 64Mb dimms to 160Mb max. I know I've had
a 7220/200MHz model running ok with 128Mb RAM (32+32+64), but I have
never seen a 160MHz model.

You probably know the 7220s "die" when the mobo battery goes flat (make
your own replacements with 3 x 1.5V AAAs and a battery holder) and the
power supplies are also rare!

Hi all, I have a couple of 7220s I've been working on for a while,
finally found some memory for them but had an interesting experience I
thought I'd share with you - as far as I know the 7220 was the only
Mac to use 3.3v 168-pin unbuffered memory, and I found some Apple
branded RAM that was badged as 64MB and worked in my 7220s, but only
showed up as 32MB!
The 7220 has 3 RAM slots, one is for single-banked RAM and the others
are for double-banked, I tried this stick in both slots on three
different machines but it only showed up as 32MB. Finally as a last
resort I tried the RAM in an old IBM 300PL I had picked up for parts
(it takes the same type of RAM) and behold! it worked as 64MB.
My question is: did I miss something here? I would have preferred to
use the 64MB stick in my 7220 (one of them has a G3 card so I wanted
to use it in that one.) I know the machines can use 64MB sticks,
because I had one other 64MB that does work in my G3 (also Apple
branded but otherwise quite different.) Similarly I found another
non-Apple stick that only works as 64 in the IBM (but I was less
surprised about that.) I'm really puzzled about the Apple branded one
that didn't work properly. What machine would it have been intended
for if not the 7220?
Anyway it's no big deal, I'll just have to find a use for my IBM
rather than cannibalising it for parts as I had planned.
