Don't throw out the portable.  Even in the condition you describe it should 
fetch $100 or more on 
ebay.  List it available for shipping to the US or worldwide and let the buyer 
pay for postage and 
handling. These machines are rare and much sought after by collectors, who 
wouldn't mind spending 
the time to restore it. 
 
If I'd been in Raymond Terrace at a less ungodly hour on my way back to 
Melbourne, I would have 
dropped by and picked it up myself :)
