AGENDA

- OVS 2.7 Status
-- Feb. 17, 2017: Release branch-2.7 as version 2.7.0.
-- ‘Experimental’ tag removed. This will enable ovs-dpdk on Fedora as
interface will be stable.
-- Some basic OVS 2.7 package testing in Red Hat on CI infrastructure.
Basic ovs-dpdk tests are ok. Nothing blocking. Request from Thomas to
publish these numbers.
-- Is OVS 2.7 LTS? Typically OVS branches are maintained with bugfixes
backported anyway but from a user perspective that is not visible. OVS
2.7 will use DPDK 16.11 LTS and have non-experimental for DPDK datapath.
Request is to have OVS 2.7 LTS also, as ‘LTS’ label can be a deployment
requirement from some users. Daniele will follow up.

- Performance
-- EMC conditional insert - Kevin did some testing with Ciara’s
submitted patches. Seeing 9%-11% improvement after EMC size is exceeded.
-- Packet drops caused by PMD disturbances (Jan)
--- upcalls! - because they are inline with the pmd, new connections can
disturb the existing flows. Possibly could make it that pmd handles emc
and dpcls and other thread handles upcall, but that might mean an issue
with out of order packets.
--- i40e PMD link state polling - seeing some stalls on a combination of
this and upcalls - possibly locking. Jan would like to move to link
state interrupts in ovs-dpdk.
--- OVS-external reasons (interrupts, scheduler etc.). Timer interrupt
is an issue. There is a patch being worked for this
https://lwn.net/Articles/705853/
-- Anyone looking inside of the guest for performance in PVP use cases?
(FBL)
--- Jan not seeing the guest as a bottleneck. Some discussion over this
- possibly different setups showing different choke points?
--- virtio 1.1 efforts to simplify and make more suitable for hw
--- testpmd --forward-mode: checksum. There is a bug in DPDK 16.11,
better to use mode io.
-- Q. When is an update Intel ONP benchmark report based on OVS 2.7 +
DPDK 16.11 expected? (Vinod)
--- A. TDB

- Features
-- sflow patches (Robin) - These are in need of review
https://mail.openvswitch.org/pipermail/ovs-dev/2016-December/325947.html
-- NAT - Darren has posted several versions of these. Daniele reviewing.
If anyone else interested please review - FBL/Ian plans to review and test.

- Hw Acceleration
-- Rony - reviewing vxlan using flow id patches (Sugesh). Has some
feedback on these patches. Looking for some public benchmarks on
OVS-DPDK. A few sources discussed:
---Intel ONP benchmarks are public (~ 1 year old). Does have vxlan
performance testing, sw based.
https://download.01.org/packet-processing/ONPS2.0/Intel_ONP_Release_2.0_Performance_Test_Report_Rev1.0-1.pdf
--- VSPERF https://wiki.opnfv.org/display/vsperf/VSperf+Home
--- Jan has published how they did their performance L3-VPN/VXLAN testing
https://mail.openvswitch.org/pipermail/ovs-dev/2016-November/325410.html
-- Mark Gray, followed up some Hwol scenarios and now see that they need
conntrack. Firewall VNF seems to be use case that does not require it.
-- ixgbe, i40e and mlx have implementations of generic flow api in dpdk
