The problem is that it's not a release at all, it is any one of many
intermediate points between 2.3 and 2.4.

You could find a "best fit" by importing your tarball into Git, then
writing a script to compare each the commits between 2.3 and 2.4 against
it, and having the script tell you the commit for which the diff is the
smallest.
