hello, thanks for your input...
So will it be able to handle 100+ ports (divide by 8) approx 13 2408's? as
well as a couple of keypads/buzzers/lcd screens?

also how would i go about using a ibutton keyfob for user authorisation?
instead of using a key to reset/turn on/off the alarm i want to use a keyfox
with an ibutton in it. So it will just be touched to a reader then verified

U could use memory chips with keys or even simple iButtons with thermometers, just checking the "unique ID" of any given 1-wire device.

Note: i have very good "low end" solution by having 8 usb RS<>USB adapters (FTDI based) and any contemporary PC-mainboard. BTW: having 100+ up ports yealds for some specialized microcontroler, don't know if owfs is to big for ethernut/atmega128 but u could try at http://www.ethernut.de and see, maybe there is ready soulution for your idea.

kd,
