Basically I used your very clever idea of wget against owhttpd.
I kept getting a lockup, and thus found a locking error -- I was using a shared area for a private lock.
I'm not sure if this will solve your problem, but at least we will restart from the same point.
I've also cleaned up the owhttpd handling internally.

Was my latest set of information (about the open files and TCP connections
of any use to you)? I'd like to reboot the system that is exhibiting the errant
behaviour but if you feel there is more we can learn from its current condition
I will delay doing so.
