I don't know if this is good or bad, but i feel myself a constant student of
everything :-p
Now, to be serius, I am in a very novice state on snmp developing... So your
answer
might gave me a good reason to deal with that idea more seriously and willing...
I felt that I had to ask before starting reinventing the wheel :)
What i was thinking of, was an off-script daemon, such as the owserver doing
that job,
but i'm not sure if i have understood correctly the way snmp-agents work.
I really don't like the idea of a script running every time a snmpget is
performed
(as this might lead into load in an open network envirnoment)
The only thing i can tell to my self for sure (and i express my thoughts
loudly):
I have the tools, it's up to me to use them. Right ? ;)
I don't want to turn this thread into an snmp-only discussion, so I might 'come
back' with my
findings in the near future.

I've looked at the SNMP protocol, and it looks like a good fit in many
respects. It seems to be a hiearchial structure of monitored values
that are queried over a network, and return values.
I have found SNMP a little opaque in implementation. There seems to be
a set hiearchy for the monitored properties (and it isn't obvious to
me where we'd fit in), and few open source implementations to build
on.
One thought is that there was, last I looked, a perl module for SNMP
server. Using owperl and that module might be a low-cost solution.
Are you an SNMP expert? If SNMP is important to you, I can assist you
in development.
