You are not missing the point.
owfs is not needed (indeed it isn't available on some platforms).
I get the hint that you are not seeing the devices. That suggests that
either the command line is incorrect, or you don't have permission to access
the device (most common with USB).

Write back if you need more assistance. I can already see that a
troubleshooting section, and explantation of the interdependence of the
different components is needed.
