Standards are a good thing. And OWFS has become a major player in terms of 1-Wire work. As an end user, I'd like to know that my hardware is fully supported and tested by OWFS and uses a wiring standard like 1WRJ45 when I buy the product along with knowing any enclosures IP rating. (Weather proof level). Seeing this on packaging and advertising would be a real plus to me.
Since some PCB's are sold as bare boards, a PCB logo would be a way for a manufacture to indicate that this product is fully supported by OWFS. As such, a logo need to small and legible and designed for a single color silk-screen. Also if it's to be used in a wide variety of places, such as web sites, black and white printed material and packaging or advertising it has to be highly visible while simple and legible. As a manufacture, this is import if I want to push OWFS support. My general idea of where a logo can take us would be that it that it's the start and a can be used as a good reason for manufactures to submit hardware samples to the OWFS group (numbers to be determined). And in return, receive the limited rights to use the logo for packaging or advertising purposes. Along with knowledge that the manufactured submitted product would be fully supported and tested by official OWFS software releases for some period of time (minimum to be determined also). Over time this could develop into a fee based system, though at the moment it is much too early for that. Maybe adding the word certified under the logo would be a way of handling this? The benefits is that it would provide more hardware to the group for testing purposes, and give a central way to insure that software testing is done by the group. End users would be reasonably sure that the hardware will work in OWFS systems. To get there I'd like to see even greater testing done of official major releases in the future (something that is never easy) and the development of some standard automated test scripts. (excuse me, as I don't really know what sort of test scripting or program is currently done now). Again, having run large major software projects myself, I know this is not the most attractive thing that developers want to work on, so the trade of interesting hardware would help make this an easier burden to bear. Good standardized testing would be of benefit to all in the long term. I see a possible explosion of different 1-wire equipment coming and many difficult challenges ahead, so starting to have some more structure would be a good thing I think. So developing standard ways of dealing with board manufactures is a good thing and gives the group some benefits, and could eventually help offset the costs of running the group. And a good simple logo is a decent start towards that.
