2.6.17.13 and 2.6.18 are optional. However, with Slackware you can download whatever kernel you like from kernel.org, and just use it. Slackware always use unpatched kernels. I usually install the default kernel. After the install is finished I go to kernel.org and grab the latest stable release. There is normally no need to use initrd.
