That's indeed what the website says, but the 2417 is not even close to a 
replacement for the 2404.  The 2404 was ideal for making slave devices - 
it consists of a shared scratch memory and parameter memory, with both a 
1-wire and a i2c-like interface, independant operation of each interface 
(up to atomic operations), interrupt on change, a realtime clock and of 
course a unique ID.

It was probably the crown jewels for 1-wire systems development.

My wish list for a future system:

4 wires (pwr and differntial data) designed for use with cat5, integration 
with say PICs (replace 232 interface with a 1-wire like interface), master 
& slave system so that the microcontroller can make decisions about 
daisychained sensors, but these can be read into owfs just like hubs.
