When I tried to hunt this donw, I discovered problems with USB and Ubuntu
7.04 and SUSE 10.1
At least on Suse, it's helped by setting HAVE_USB_INTERRUPT_READ to off.

Hunting things down, there is a spate of reports on scanner problems and
kernels built with USB_SUSPEND (as in Ubuntu 7.04).

http://lists.alioth.debian.org/pipermail/sane-devel/2007-June.txt.gz has

This is due to Ubuntu (and variants) 7.04 being shipped with a
kernel which has USB_SUSPEND enabled. See this bug, which
has "medium" importance:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/sane-backends/+bug/85488

So I'm trying to find the problem, but could use help. I don't think having
a USB
adapter without an ID chip is a problem. We've addressed that problem
before.
