Hello!
This is getting strangely baroque. Shortly after I posted mine, and saw your
comments, an interesting series of comments on the exact same thing surfaced
on the NSLU2 lists concerning the exact same issues.

Eventually it evolved into something that wasn't exactly resolved, but it
did reach a conclusion, even it didn't make any sense.

They have been battering around this issue ever since the firm made the bad
decision to discontinue that device.

And thank you Mark for confirming my theories regarding the OpenWRT hardware
page.
