Are you able to compile your own kernel? I follow the kernel mailing 
list (a little) and Alan Cox is doing alot of work on serial & timers. 
If you can get an oops with a current kernel then posting it to the KML 
might be very helpful.

Since this happens during close maybe you can tweak something in user 
space to keep the port open as a crude workaround?
