Showing the log at startup of owhttpd or owserver would give a hint.
Try:
sudo /opt/owfs/bin/owserver -d /dev/ttyS0 --error_level=9 --foreground
(or whatever port)
The initial debugging code should show the serial startup negotiation.
You can also try digitemp to make sure it's not an owfs-only problem.
