I'm having trouble replicating this error on a x686 system (32-version of
Ubuntu on AMD64 hardware).

The read routines are cleaned up a bit in the next version (which is what I
tested here) so perhaps that might fix a mysterious  problem. On the other
hand, 2.8p0 and 2.8p1 both give a same correct response.

Is is possible to generate a --debug log?
