I also ran into the "rts/cts needed for the LinkUSB" problem and also 
wondered why it didn't seem to bite everybody. I asked the iButtonLink 
guys and they said it worked for them without any special tweaks so I 
suspect the problem depends on the kernel or FTDI driver.

Paul added some fix for this in 2.8p2. I haven't tested it and since you 
are running 2.8p2 and still need to patch to turn on hardware flow 
control I suspect Paul's change doesn't fix things. Here's the 
description of Paul's change from the 2.8p2 release notes:

"6. Add hardware flow control to com port settings in third attempt to 
set up serial bus master (should help with some USB/serial convertors)."

flow control is needed for the LinkUSB to work:
