Hello! Robert, whose distribution are you using? Some of them seem to have a preference. And when building an RPM for one for example it definitely won't work on any others. Debs for plain Debian, typically won't work on Ubuntu because of peculiar library issues I'm not too familiar with. And if you are building from source, as I do, why not try deleting the libtool object that got stuck in there when the file was built.
