Brilliant, thank you, that's what I needed.  I may even add a cron job
to do the above once a day or so as then I won't need the ssh access.

The system is an old Asus eeePc on a boat, it's for monitoring the
temperature (and a couple of other things) on the boat so that I know
all is OK there.  The connection to the internet at the boat is a
decidedly flakey 3G connection so isn't always 100% reliable and as the
telephone company have their own NAT in the way (as well as that of the
3G router) I have to initiate the ssh connection from the boat end and
then reverse tunnel through that to get a connection from here (home) to
the boat.  Hence even getting an ssh connection to the boat is sometimes
trick and the more I can make the system on the boat resilient and self
correction the better.  It doesn't matter if it doesn't work every
minute of the day but it does matter that it keeps working and I get
information from the boat most days.
