Hello!
Basically folks you have the right inference. I am using the reed
switches as the data sheet suggested, but without those pull up
resistor attached. Nathan this is a DS2423 and is supposed to behave
in a manner described somewhere in the data sheet, but you've got the
right idea.

Paul I believe I am seeing the effects of not adding a pull up
resistor. I shall add one of an appropriate rating somewhere around
>1M Ohms. range and repeat these studies.
