Interesting point(s) indeed.

I actually have been wondering for a while about the legality of 
creating microcontroller-based 1-Wire slaves and have yet to find a 
conclusive answer.

Obviously, there are non-Dallas/Maxim 1-Wire slaves out there, but I do 
not what arrangements, if any, the creators of those devices have with 
Dallas/Maxim.
