Does anyone have any success stories involving CPU-based slaves and "real"

Many years ago (as in almost a decade now), several of us out here implemented a slave on a PIC16F628 to interface a Sensirion SHT75 with 1-wire. We kept fairly quiet about it, as at that point Maxim/Dallas wasn't being overly friendly towards non-licensed slaves (and one of us doing the implementing was a design engineer for Maxim). It was almost certainly clocked at 20MHz, just because that's what we were using on everything else at the time.

I can't promise I still have the source code, but I'll dig around and see if you're curious. It's written in PIC assembler however, so it would be almost useless if you're trying to implement on an AVR.
