It may and may not work on different motherboards. AMD is known to be
5V tolerant, but my laptop core2 based and it is not.

Ok, if DS2480B is the best, why not using some virtual USB-UART
adapters like FT231X from FTDI? As a downside it gives you only one
1-wire line.
They say that i2c can drive "not as many" as UART, but how many? Now I
have 10 devices, is it many or not?
