I have recently added to my network a Hobby board LCD driver.
Following owfs man
pages I have no problem to write anything to the LCD, or to read the state of
the 3 input switches (the 3 first PIO's as per Hobby board design).

Hello,

since I haven't got answer let's ask it another way:
Is there any possibility to:
- reset/re-initialize the 2408?
or
- remove it from the 1wire directory tree and the reload it again
(I assume it will re-initialize)?

Sorry that I didn't respond to your question earlier although I knew the answer.

I found a workaround for this some time ago.

before writing to the LCD do
printf "1" > "/mnt/owfs/29.BABC08000000/strobe"

and If you want to fiddle with 3 IO

printf "0" > "/mnt/owfs/29.BABC08000000/strobe"

Unfortunately writing anything to the LCD resets remaining 3 IO's
I reported this as a bug a year ago but it seems a low priority even for me.
Now I just manually set 3 IOs after writing do LCD.

I attach a bash script that reads IO which is a button and resets some countdown.

I used it last year for countdown of Discovery last mission.
Now I don't have access to my router to test it.
