Hi, I have a tree topology, with branches that works fine:
USB adapter *1m trunk*, then a 8m branch, then 4x1.5m branches ([3x DS18S20 1 per branch], and [2 ds2405 and 3 ds2406 on a branch]) and a 3m empty branch :) *3m trunk*, then 2x6m (2xDS18B20) and a 15m branch (1x2xDS18B20), the latter with has another 1.5 m branch (1xDS2405) *6m trunk*, then a 1.5m (1xDS18B20) and then a 4m branch (1xDS2405) All devices have 1-wire, ground and +5V: I've never seen a single CRC error. There is a Maxim/Dallas white paper about bus topology (I recommend you Google for it), which describes how you need to calculate the complexity of a bus topology. It provides the calculation of the weight of a bus for stars, trees and daisy-chains as well. It takes wire capacity and trunk/branch lengths as an input and as a result you get a weight number. The white paper will tell you what the maximum recommended weight for a given bus is. My bus (as described above) is still on the safe side It had less than 50% of the recommended max. reliable weight if I recall correctly.
