This is an interesting device. Perhaps difficult to answer if you're unable to get the distance readings, but do you know if it will work for sensing snow depth (i.e. level)? I'm currently using a sensor from SensComp hooked up with a DS2438 for that purpose, but the above device seems to be more plug&play.
