Looking at the datasheet
http://datasheets.maximintegrated.com/en/ds/DS9092-DS9092T.pdf there is no
mention of LEDs, and only 2 wires (data and ground).

I presume that and LEDs are controlled at the sensor under a strict;y
hardware control (maybe power and contact?)

You wondered about the best way to poll for contact. I think polling is
required, although some bus masters may do that automatically.  The cost of
polling isn't that high, but 0.1 second might be a little frequent -- how
long a lag can you tolerate? Also you want to choose a polling scheme that
doesn't require too much overhead -- not starting a full process for each
query.
