Paul Yes the hardware master is still there. I agree it looks like a hardware fault but all the cable and devices test fine. All the cables work as gig Ethernet cables. I have oone 10 meters long that will not work on 1-wire as described but I am using it now to connect to my BT Router. If I just connect one temp sensor on a short wire it is fine, another on short wire fine use a long cable such as the 10 meter one and all devices disappear from the bus even with nothing onb the other end of the cable the original temp sensor is gone.
Why I am puzzled as you said below until the lightning strike it all worked fine. I will have to get my scope out of the loft and check for excessive noise being picked up the only thing I haven't checked for yet.
