I am making good progress thanks to this excellent forum.
I verified the USB address, then added these lines to owfs.conf
    device = /dev/ttyUSB0
    mountpoint = /home/pwh/1wire

I start owfs with
    owfs
Now I am seeing
    26.AA5245010000     the MS-TV device, DS2438
Temperature is correct, about 20 C in my warm office.
Voltage is also correct.
The leads are connected to a 9 volt battery, measure at 9.19 volts and
VAD reads 9.18.
