As it works on your end, I digged a bit into the issue. It appears (according
to apache2/error.log) that
/var/www/owncloud/apps/gallery/ajax/scanForAlbums.php is called, but this file
does not exist. (why? I am on git master branch with a clean working directory).
Nevertheless, to answer your direct questions and although the above issue is
most likely the cause:
