A little bit more information would be great to find out what broke,
i.e. what are your (custom) settings?
What are the fields "Base User Tree" and "Base Group Tree" for and how do I use
them? At the moment they are blank.
Indeed, some documention is lacking therefore.
Base User Tree and Group Tree is a possibility to give the base dn for
only users and groups, so that not the whole LDAP would be searched. It
is said to improve performance. E.g. you could assign there
cn=users,dc=example,dc=com
cn=groups,dc=example,dc=com
If no value is given, the base dn from the basic settings is used.
The attributes I use for email and quota do exist.
They are not crucial for successful login.
