Hi,
That is the exact way that I was thinking of doing it, initially. Then
improve it step by step.
I'd very much like to work on this together.
I could perhaps come up with some ideas. I was planing of starting this
after June 4th, when I have my last exam for the semester.
Creating a solution that works even with shared files would probably
take some fundamental changes to permissions (allow shared users to
encrypt certain dirs) and file storage (save a copy or seperate the
shared files). Or actually copy the shared files to the other users
directory. But that would result in less space left for the users.

Hi Daniel,
the current encryption app is a very basic implementation of encryption using
blowfish.
The files are encrypted with a personal key thats encrypted with the password
of the user.
Which means that it is relatively secure but also has drawbacks. A problem is
that the data is lost if you forget your password. There is no way, beside a
brute force attack to get your data back. Another drawback is that this
collides with sharing obviously.
There are plans to improve this system in the next ownCloud iteration. Could
you send your ideas/plans for this? Perhaps we could iterate together and
improve it.

Hi all,
I just upgraded to 4 RC2 and I found the application for server side
encryption. This might be something that I myself wanted to write, and I'd like
to know more about it: how does it work; what kind of encryption is used;
documentation; how can I help?
