Not that I would expect that the .NET assemblies should 'behave' differently, but why use CE v3.1 - why not v3.5 ?

I can see SqlServerCe 3.1 assembly in the GAC and I have another project with a reference to it. However I can't add a reference in another project, it just won't appear in the Add Reference dialog list. Anyone know what's going wrong here or how to fix it? Ugh, do I reinstall CE again? Greg Ps. I just noticed also that SQL Server CE does not appear in the Add Data Connection dialog in the server explorer.
