I take pride in running a "clean" machine. Using autoruns.exe I find and
stop or remove any useless processes. After installing things like Nero,
Adobe Reader and various device drivers it can take hours to get rid the
mind boggling amount of utter garbage they install.

Well, Adobe Reader defeated me ... straight after booting this morning I get
an Abode reader popup asking for an update.

I thought I killed that stupid thing deader than Elvis months ago, but it
has outsmarted me and reappeared. My pride is shattered and I'm angry.
Despite searching the registry and the web I am unable to figure out just
how it managed to remain alive and where it has secreted itself. I found an
option in reader preferences to toggle the auto-update behaviour and I used
procmon.exe to try and find what it's changing, but I can't find any
registry or file writes in the log. The bastard has tricked me.

The only thing to do now is get rid of Adobe Reader forever and replace it
with something else that is polite and lightweight. I'm running some web
searches for Adobe reader replacements, but I thought I'd ask in here if
anyone has one they like.

Cheers,

Greg
