If this is your generic Windows Server 2008 box (i.e. not the GoDaddy
machine), then there is definitely something wrong.

I assume you want anonymous access to the plain HTM, ASPX and web service?
(i.e. not authenticated access)?

Yes, my plain 2008 box requires I give IUSR and NETWORK SERVICE file system
permissions to allow them to work. Otherwise I get an authentication dialog
prompt. I do want anonymous access to the plain htm web site and apps like I
used to have on my old servers by default.

There must be a setting somewhere in IIS or my web site that is totally
stuffed to cause this behaviour, but I can't find it. Has the default
behaviour changed from 2003 to 2008? I don't recall changing any dangerous
defaults this morning.

In the meantime I'll waste more time and run hundreds of web searches as
usual in search of an answer.
