Well Elop's a pretty stubborn guy by all accounts and him being 7th
largest share holder at Microsoft + having ties with Steve Ballmer i
think this whole relationship is Microsoft's way of bailing out Nokia
without raising consent decree / European union flags. Its almost like
Steve B said down Elop and said " I need you to take one for the team,
go be the CEO of Nokia and lets try Pink Studio again only this time
with an established brand".

I'd say Nokia is under a "new day" leadership and given Elop's past
success (which is really all you can bank on atm for Nokia) he may
turn the "burning platform" into a patio deck with a good view :D (heh
metaphor abuse). Having a hardware provider produce a phone that is
strongly influenced by Microsoft teams could be the kick up this
freaky phone needs as consumer wise the current state of play isn't
working as well as they predicted (if any of you raise the 2million
units figure i'll slap you :D).

Under Elop Macromedia had the motto "Experience Matters" so i'm
thinking this guy has his finger on the right set of pulses it just
will be a test to see if he can marshal Nokia employees to back his
play. He turned Macromedia from a small software company into a
3.4billion acquisition and arguably thanks to his efforts Adobe is 10x
stronger as a brand today. He's a very disruptive business man for
rich platform markets (devices + desktop) ...
