How technical people derail conversations by saying "well actually"

A work colleague of mine used to say that frequently 20 years ago and I never heard it again until a few years ago when it started to spring up everywhere. It seems to have spread like a virus, infecting people of all walks of life. I hope someone is doing PhD research to discover where it came from. Greg
