My experience doesn't fair much better. I get a UAC dialog every time I launch windows to allow the update checker to run, pretty poor since it's a security issue if you don't update.

Every update attempt on my Win7 Standard User system fails, if I let it proceed. My solution is to uninstall the 32-bit and 64-bit applications (currently Java 6 Update 24), then download the updates from Oracle and manually install them.
