I'm using VS2010 Premium and VS2012 Premium but those licenses come from my
workplace and I'm not convinced that I actually need any of the Premium
features. While it's true that the Express editions of VS don't allow
extensions I'm pretty sure you won't get those extensions for SharpDevelop
either. I did go through a period of wishing MS would give away the
equivalent of VS Professional for free but then I used some of those free
IDEs. By charging for their product it keeps Microsoft invested in making
VS the best IDE out there and I wouldn't change that for anything.

Having said all of that I find my development style is becoming less and
less "Integrated" anyway as I tend to rely on command line and linqpad
spiking more and more. I suspect I could do with turning a huge swath of VS
functionality off.
