D'oh ... it turns out there is a link in the Azure portal Virtual machines tab titled "DISKS" (grey and easy to miss). If you go into that screen you can manage (and delete) the images associated with virtual machines. Once I did so it unlocked the storage account and I could delete it as well. So I've cleaned everything up and will have another bash at making a VM, maybe from the Gallery this time -- Greg
