The most interesting part is why the ECJ ruled the safe harbour provisions invalid in the first place: http://curia.europa.eu/jcms/upload/docs/application/pdf/2015-10/cp150117en.pdf Basically, the ECJ had enough of US companies blatantly violating the conditions. The last straw was apparently the inability of the Irish High Court to decide a case regarding Facebook giving the US public authorities (e.g. NSA) unrestricted access to an Austrian citizen's personal data. -- Thomas Koster
