It does say "tracing messages are sent through switches to listeners". Hmmm, I guess that hints I *need* a switch element, but they don't say I *must* have one. As you say in the other messages, the overall idea of trace sources is simple and effective, allowing different independent libraries to spit out trace lines, and the calling apps can listen to whatever they like to changing the config. That's exactly what I was trying to do this morning. Although, changing configs isn't always as easy as they suggest, in fact you might not be able to use one, in which case you have to do what the config section does in code. *GK*
