SQL Server of Linux has been out for a while and I think it was shortly after it was released that it was shown to outperform on Linux compared to Windows Server on the same hardware.
When you're selling cloud like we the $ story for Windows Server isn't great these days ... on a larger virtual machine the Windows Server license is a BIG chunk. With the earnest move to PaaS and SaaS and things like AAD instead of AD, I'm not sure what the value prop of Windows Server is any more - apart from running legacy software.
