ELECTRONIC MEDIA SUMMARY

3/7 3CR 1030 Occupational health and safety. CEPU
                       Communications Division Occupational Health &
Safety officer Margaret Williamson discusses the
high rate of workplace death and injury in
Australia and the inadequacies of the workers
                       compensation system. Williamson attacks current
management practices as a prime cause of this and
accuses Telstra of manipulating health and safety
officer elections to allow sub-standard practices
to be institutionalised. (Dur: 5.42) (HM050724)

2/7 3AW 1030 Vic nurses shortfall examined. Vic Health and
Aged Care Minister Rob Knowles discusses the
alleged shortage of nurses in the States health
system claiming that overall there are sufficient
numbers, however, he does concede that some
specialised areas are understaffed. Knowles says
the problem is a national one and calls for
increased promotion of the concept of nurse
practitioner. Knowles also rejects claims the
GST will increase health services costs. (Dur:

2/7 6WF 1630 Tobacco duty free status. Australian Council on
Smoking and Health spokesman Ron Edwards discusses
the organisations call on Federal Justice and
Customs Minister Amanda Vanstone to follow the
European Unions example and remove tobacco
products and cigarettes. duty free status.
Edwards says such a move would reduce health costs
as increasing costs reduces tobacco consumption
and calls for items such as Nicorette and Nicobate
to be subsidised. (Dur: 5.50) (HM050726)
