THE AUSTRALIAN
John Kerin p2 Bigger bill in bush for hospital treatment. A
rural health services plan to reduce costs could
see patients in NSW bush hospitals forced to pay
charges for non-urgent accident and emergency
                       treatment. (HM290700)

Amanda Hodge p4 Donor surge fails to allay shortage fears. The
Australian Red Cross Blood say they have had
between 10 and 20 per cent more donors attend
since news broke of the Melbourne schoolgirl
infected with HIV during a hospital transfusion.

Amanda Hodge p4 Transfusion victims father doubts review. The
Royal Childrens Hospital and the Australian Red
Cross Blood Service have set up a three-member
panel to investigate alternative blood transfusion
                       techniques, specifically whether direct familial
blood transfusions can be allowed, after a
Melbourne school girl was given HIV-infected
blood. The father of the girl attacked the review
plans, saying that their is little chance for
objectivity as the panel members are directly
                       involved with the hospital. (HM290702)

THE FINANCIAL REVIEW
Jane Boyle and p3 US approval makes Biota shares look healthier.
Brett Clegg Shares in pharmaceutical company Biota Holdings
Ltd increased by 33 per cent yesterday following
the approval if its anti-flu drug Relenza by the
US Food and Drug Administration. (HM290703)

THE SYDNEY MORNING HERALD
Paola Totaro p4 Drug reforms herald new era, says Della Bosca.
NSW Special Minister of State John Della Bosca
said yesterday the recent drug reform had launched
a new era, where radical policies would be trialed
on an evidence-based politics basis. (HM290704)

THE AGE
Nicole Brady and pA3 Kennett open to drug safe-house. Vic Premier Jeff
Gabrielle Costa Kennett said yesterday he was not opposed to the
idea of a safe injecting room for heroin users in
Melbourne if health experts can adequately
convince him of the merits of such a proposal.
                       (HM290705)

Carolyn Webb pA4 Families can donate interstate. Directed
donation, whereby individuals are allowed to
provide blood for use in hospital transfusions to
family members, is allowed in most hospitals and
States in Australia, but the practice was denied
to the family of the Melbourne schoolgirl now
infected with the HIV virus. (HM290706)

Lyall Johnson pA4 New HIV test detects virus itself. A new HIV
blood screening method to be put in place by the
Red Cross Blood Service next year is expected to
be more effective than current screening
procedures as it detects the virus itself rather
than measuring the bodys immune response.
                       (HM290707)

Chloe Saltau pA4 Court victory dubious lawyers. Slater & Gordon
law firm senior partner Peter Gordon said
yesterday the family of the Melbourne schoolgirl
infected with HIV during a hospital blood
transfusion may find it difficult to win
                       compensation. (HM290708)

Manika Naidoo pA6 Disability row grows as hospital bans end. Vic
disability workers have stepped up their campaign
for improved wages and conditions, as around 450
workers walked off the job at more than 120
locations yesterday and early this morning.

staff at the Australian Tax Office as the
Community and Public Sector Union maintained
discussions on the future of excess internal

six Black Hawk helicopters and explosions

decision to privatise its planning division could
enable the State Government to wash its hands of
                       future policies. (HM290714)

quality monitor which has the capacity to switch

                       concentration has been reached. (HM290716)

an increased demand to directly donate blood for
surgery, following news a Vic girl had contracted

and David Ecles Services Minister Dean Brown says a crackdown on
prescription drug abuse will save the State Health
Department up to $31 million per year. (HM290719)

Michael McKinnon p8 Inflation is dead - Costello. Australian Bureau of
Statistics figures released yesterday show lower-
than-expected inflation and few price pressures,
with prices rising by 0.4 per cent in the three

below 2 per cent. The market yesterday responded
positively to the result pushing interest rates 10
                       basis points lower. (HM290721)

Tracey Joyson p61 Flu drug gives Biota a boost. Biota shares closed
15 per cent higher yesterday after the United
States Food and Drug Administration decided to
allow the companys anti-flu drug Relenza into the
American market. A milestone payment and royalty
payments from sales of the drug are expected to
bring Biota close to profitability this year.

Association has suggested improvements need to be

Carr has called for a trial of Australias first
legal safe injecting room for heroin addicts in
response to the NSW drug summit held two months

RILLA 1230 28/7 Genetically modified food uncertain. Green group
coalition Australian Citizen's Alliance has called
for a five year ban on the use of genetically
modified crops and food in Australia, until
labelling is instituted and crops are properly
trialed. The Alliance has expressed concern about
the impact on people's health and ecosystems of
such foods and claim to be willing to go into
action to remove crops which are genetically
modified if the Federal Government does not ensure
the trials by private companies are more safely
conducted. In turn, organic farmers are concerned
about the impact of such crops on organic crops.
GMAC Advisory Committee spokesperson Rick Rousch
is concerned at the possibility of protest action
against such crops as there is a dire need for
                       carefully conducted trials. (Dur: 05.00)

2KY 0800 28/7 HIV infection a random tragedy. Red Cross Blood
Bank for ACT and NSW director Brendon Wiley says
the Vic Blood Banks first incident of infection
is a tragedy, but realistically 14,000,000 samples
have been tested and that the incidents of HIV in
directed blood donations is higher than in the
random samples. Wiley continues the three week
window period for HIV screening is too short for
proper detection of the disease, that there are
only minimal differences in the screening
processes between the states and that plasma
donors are screened with every donation. He says
that changes made owing to the tragedy in Vic must
not complicate the system to such an extent that
people no longer have time to donate blood and so
                       cause a shortage. (HM290729)
