Red Cross Blood Bank for ACT and NSW director Brendon Wiley says the Vic Blood Bank�s first incident of infection is a tragedy, but realistically 14,000,000 samples have been tested and that the incidents of HIV in directed blood donations is higher than in the random samples. Wiley continues the three week window period for HIV screening is too short for proper detection of the disease, that there are only minimal differences in the screening processes between the states and that plasma donors are screened with every donation. He says that changes made owing to the tragedy in Vic must not complicate the system to such an extent that people no longer have time to donate blood and so cause a shortage.
