Elaine thank you so much for the reply,

I read your tenderness and understanding and appreciate your insightful
comments.

Now to the scenario and questions.

Wow what a wonderful, woman, person and fellow himan being. She is an
intensely giving and informed person who has a wonderful spirit, and
from your description has applied herself to many worthwhile and
rewarding areas of practice.

Is she a Midwife? Well currently not. She has certainly been in the
past and has the heart and maybe the philosophy of a midwife but
because of her varied and diverse practice is she truly able to
dedicate herself to women who are planning pregnancy, are pregnant, who
are birthing and in the immediate familial environment with the same
commitment etc of a person who is exclusively orientated to providing
this care? Maybe?......... Good choice for a scenario.

Is she truly with women? Certainly, however was the expression used to
be with women applicable to all situations (for example- menopausal
care etc, or indeed the horrid world of domestic violence!). I think
the expression pertained to women with child and through their journey
to motherhood and familial life- Of course this encompasses all aspects
of a womans individual life, and the role of a midwife itself is varied
and the midwife will have to be prepared to care for all individuals
and their specific and individual needs and situations (especially
important when one is aware of the high rates of sexual and other forms
of abuse and violence. However I think that someone who has their
hands involved in the other specific areas of womanly care such as your
sighted example may well have an altered view on the 'normal' and be it
because of a pathological or spiritually challanged this will influence
their role as a midwife.

Is she a midwife currently, well I am not sure I think not. She is a
resoundingly good person who practices facets of midwifery and
probably, because of her nature and commitment to the care of women in
various situations, is probably more closer to a midwife than some
others who have that title in their work environment. But no I don't
think a midwife! Sorry- it sounds so judgemental and arrogant. I mean
it not to be offensive I have so much respect for this person because
of her deeds and obvious passion.

Should she be on curriculum and advisory commitees not as a practicing
midwife. This should be reserved for just that!

Thank you for your comments.

With love and peace in midwifery wuth respect to other carers.
