Dear List,
GBS PROTOCOLS
I am part of the 'Management of Term PROM and GBS' workteam at Mater
Mothers' Hospital. I would be happy to send copies of the information
pamphlet we give to parents regarding this subject to anyone who is
interested. I also have full copies of all the literature used as research
in the development of this policy. The list is quite extensive but I can
send or fax copies of the reference list if anyone would like these. The
references themselves are too large a number to send. Let me know what else
you want and I will endeavor to get them. Please tell me your snail mail
address so I can forward it to you.

BIRTHING BALLS
We use birthing balls at the hospital where I work. I personally find them
very comfortable to sit on, and the majority of our ladies who use them also
seem to like them. They allow them to have some mobility to move their
pelvis as they wish whilst being able to sit if they are a bit tired. They
can also be used as a movable support while on their knees. In my
experience, extended time sitting on birth stools can lead to an oedematous
peri, but the ball provides support for this area. They can be used in the
shower, but are not recommended for use after having narcotics. I have some
guidelines for use so once again, let me know and I can send you a copy.

THIRD STAGE
Some of my colleagues from the Community Midwifery Service at Mater Mothers'
Hospital in Brisbane have received funding to undertake a study on
Physiological vs Active Management of Third Stage. It should be underway
anytime now. We just need the guidelines etc shared between the CMS team.
So, there may be nothing in Australia yet, but we are working on it!

Well I think that is about it!
Regards,
Janelle Laws
