I was thinking after reading the list over the last few days of what a great idea it
would be if all the midwives here would just quit and start up an independent group
practice that could offer women what they want.
But it would take all the midwives to quit because otherwise they would just steam on
with only a slight ripple and those few left would with the help of whoever they could
get to help (non midwives) continue to 'care' for women as they arrive.
The potential of the idea isgreat. Imagine the stir.
On an even playing field eventally the women would solve the problem because they
would choose which service meeted their needs and I don't have any doubts about which
that would be but the palying field is not even. They get the model they've got for
free and the alternative model is going to cost them. My reality is that a large
majority act with their wallets and not their hearts and and believe that they will
survive the system because their mothers, sisters and friends have and so it will be
OK. The fact that it could be better is not something they let themselves consider.
Lets continue to plan for the Utopia we would choose to live in and then maybe
others will join us and we'll be ready to take advantage of any little opportunity but
somedays with the juggling of work, family and life it is hard to find the energy.
